Your questions, our answers.

How much vitamin D should kids take a day?

The NHS recommends a daily vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms (400 IU) for children aged 1 to 4. Children over 4 should consider taking 10 micrograms (400 IU) a day in autumn and winter, and some may need it all year round. Breastfed babies under 1 need 8.5 to 10 micrograms (340 to 400 IU) a day, but babies having more than 500ml of infant formula a day usually don’t need extra, as formula is already fortified.

Is too much vitamin D bad for kids?

Yes. Too much vitamin D over time can cause calcium to build up in the body, which can damage the kidneys and heart. The NHS advises a daily maximum of 25 micrograms (1,000 IU) for babies under 12 months, 50 micrograms (2,000 IU) for children aged 1 to 10, and 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) for children aged 11 to 17. Always check the vitamin D in any other supplements before combining them.

Should you give vitamin D to children?

The NHS recommends vitamin D supplements for babies and young children, depending on their age and how they’re fed. Children over 4 should consider one in autumn and winter, when there’s less sunlight for the body to make its own. Vitamin D is needed for normal growth and development of bone in children. If you’re unsure, ask a pharmacist or health visitor.

When’s the best time to take vitamin D spray?

Any time that suits your family’s routine. Our vitamin D3 spray for kids can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. Just stick to the recommended daily amount on the label, and check the total vitamin D if your child takes other supplements.
